25 Years of AIDS
11 May 2006 UNAIDS
UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot recently talked to Newsweek magazine as part of its special issue on the 25 years of AIDS. The article shows the enormity of the epidemic as well as the hope.
"Whole communities are standing up to take their destinies in hand. If we can tap that energy and combine it with the resources of the rich world, I think we're going to see tremendous progress over the next few years."
Protecting Women From HIV/AIDS - Melinda Gates
11 May 2006
A few months ago, on a trip to Africa, I met with a group of women in Kibera, the biggest slum in Kenya. These women ranged in age from 16 to 45 but had one thing in common: AIDS had devastated their lives. A woman I'll call Chanya told me her story. Chanya is a mother in her 30s trying to raise four children. She does not fit the typical profile of a person living with AIDS—at least not the profile that prevails in the West...

World Health Day 2006: Working together for health

World Health Day 2006: Working together for healthHealth workers - the people who provide health care to those who need it - are the heart of health systems. In addition to the press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, WHO and UNAIDS will today also hold a press conference in Dakar, Senegal, highlighting progress made in scaling up treatment in the country. Global Access to HIV Therapy Tripled in Past Two Years, But Significant Challenges Remain
28 Mar 2006 WHO
A new report by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that the number of people on HIV antiretroviral treatment (ART) in low- and middle-income countries more than tripled to 1.3 million in December 2005 from 400 000 in December 2003. Charting the final progress of the "3 by 5" strategy to expand access to HIV therapy in the developing world, the report also says that the lessons learned in the last two years provide a foundation for global efforts now underway to provide universal access to HIV treatment by 2010.

Economic security for women key to HIV prevention
8 Mar 2006 UNAIDS

A new paper published by the UNAIDS-led Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) shows that  when women have an income and a safe place to live, they are much better able to negotiate abstinence, fidelity, and safer sex. Economic security, the paper stresses, is a major factor in enabling women to protect themselves from HIV. Today, however, of the 1.2 billion people living on less than US $1 a day, 70% are women.  They also represent almost half of all people living with HIV globally.

World not doing nearly enough to protect children affected by AIDS

The global response to children affected by HIV and AIDS does not come close to matching the enormity of their rapidly expanding plight. Children living with sick and dying parents remain extremely vulnerable, and an estimated 4 million infected children do not have access to appropriate treatments.

PlusNews launches Portuguese HIV/AIDS news service
3 Feb 2006 UN IRIN PlusNews
To fill the information gap on HIV/AIDS in Portuguese-speaking Africa, PlusNews has launched a new service specialising in HIV/AIDS in the five Lusaphone countries of Africa. The goal of the service is to be the Portuguese-language reference point for HIV/AIDS in Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe, with links to Brazil, Portugal, and the African Diaspora in the European Union and elsewhere. Like its sister services PlusNews English and French, PlusNews Portuguese produces original stories through a network of stringers based in the capital and provinces of their countries. We report on the latest medical and cultural research, government, donor and NGO activity, the voices of people living with HIV, gender, governance, and the broad spectrum of issues that interact with HIV and AIDS. The website features job vacancies, conferences, events, studies and training tools. Subscribing is easy and can be done online. You can choose a daily or weekly format.
