Kaisernetwork, a free online health-policy news and information service provided by the Kaiser Family Foundation, is the official webcaster of the 4th IAS conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention. During the conference, and archived online following the conference, kaisernetwork.org will provide tape-delayed webcasts and transcripts of each day’s sessions, including the opening and closing sessions, plenary sessions, and selected other sessions and press conferences; interviews with newsmakers; and summaries of international news coverage.
World Bank Supports HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean (Overiew) Stevan Jackson  17 Apr 2007
In 2006, close to 1.7 million people were living with HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean, two thirds of who live in the four largest countries: Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. Last year alone an estimated 140,000 people were newly infected with HIV and approximately 60,000 people died of AIDS. In the last 20 years, a total of 600,000 people have died from AIDS in the region. The latest UNAIDS estimates published in November 2006 indicate that HIV prevalence is highest in the smaller countries of Central America: just under 1% in El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama, 1.5% in Honduras and 2.5% in Belize in 2005.

Twenty-five years ago on June 5, 1981, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the first warning about a disease that would become know as AIDS. In the early years of the epidemic, fear and misinformation were pervasive, as researchers worked to identify and understand the virus and how it spread. Since that time, AIDS has changed the world, growing into a global pandemic affecting tens of millions of men, women and children. The Kaiser Family Foundation is releasing two new documents that provide historical perspective on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States -- a new report on the history and development of national HIV/AIDS- focused media campaigns and a chart pack of key trends in the U.S. epidemic.
